Having read several of Tara Murtha's journalistic articles I was as anxious to read this new medium of hers as I was to learn about the subject. We all remember the song, the mystery, maybe even the film but I never realized how much a mystery Bobbie Gentry was herself. That is not to say she had an illusive career, on the contrary we learn how she vaulted from singer songwriter having a hit and album that dislodged Sgt Pepper in the summer of '67 to multiple albums, Vegas shows of the highest caliber, her own contracts,production and company unheard of at that time in showbiz for a woman. But then save a few interviews and award shows she literally drops the radar.Ms. Murtha does fantastic journalistic detective work on this subject while she teaches us about the impact of this song "Ode to Billie Joe". She introduces us to Gentry's friends, family, slimeballs and entertainment sharks along the way trying to piece together the urban legends regarding the writing, playing, production and breadth of this song/woman. I always liked the song and its mystery, it made the public guess what the real reason and outcome was but we are reminded that is not the point - the point was Southern relationships and handling matters of such question.Tara Murtha's writing style is spot on, keen, cleverand entertaining.She knows about writing and she knows her music. This is a must read for folks who like a good mystery, like a good music story, like an uplifting story on woman's rights and gains or those who just like the song "Ode to Billie Joe". Definitely get this book!
Well, I don't think I've been this disappointed in a long while. Not in the book, no; I'm disappointed that there are so many questions left unanswered. I'm disappointed in the inability to see the shows of days gone by. I'm disappointed that Bobbie's out there somewhere holding on tightly to all her secrets, and will quite possibly take them to the grave.On the other hand, this was well written piece. A worth while read to anyone interested in bad ass women ahead of their time.
Thoroughly researched and presented in an engaging and easy-to-follow style, this is a fantastic little book. If I were to make an editing suggestion -- and who am I to backseat drive? -- there is a reference to the tune "Ode to Billie Joe" by Lou Donaldson, a funky rendition that has been sampled by many hip-hop artists mentioned in this book. However, my nit-pick is that the drum rhythm seems to be ascribed to Lou Donaldson, upon whose album it was originally recorded. Lou Donaldson did not play that drum track. Those drums belong to Idris Muhammad, then Leo Morris, and since proper attribution is so central to this book, I just though we should give credit where credit is due. Anyhow, love the book!
Tara Murtha's account of Bobbie Gentry's life and career shone a spotlight on a ghost, a hauntingly beautiful and talented woman who is best remembered for that one song. But she was so much more than a pretty face and voice. Successful in business as well as the performing arts, she burned as bright as a 4th of July fireworks display. Then just as quickly, she was gone. Ms. Murtha's book is definitely worth making a small investment of your time and money for a glimpse into the enigmatic life of a fascinating person.
Gentry turns out to be much more interesting and multi-layered than I thought would be the case. And the mystery of her withdrawal from public life only serves to make the decades before her exit all the more intriguing. Even Garbo was spotted in the streets of New York in the last 30 years of her life, but Gentry has simply vanished. Author Murtha writes plainly and simply, not letting her love of the artist's work expand into idolatry. Fascinating stuff.
If you ever wondered what became of Bobbie Gentry or if you were curious what her cultural impact was, this is the book for you. It begins with a "Forward" by Jill Sobule in which the younger performer describes seeing Gentry on "The Smothers Brothers' Show" and how she was haunted: by the story, by Bobbie, and by the whole Southern Gothic thing.The book also discusses Gentry's other works, also. So far, the whole thing has been most illuminating.
This is such an excellent book. I thought I was the only one who cared about why Bobbie Gentry dropped out of sight and whether or not there was a seven-minute original version of 'Ode.' Tara Murtha has written an excellent book about both Ms. Gentry and 'Ode,' with wonderful, painstaking research. Whether you're a big fan or marginal fan of Bobbie, if you ever find yourself wondering 'what DID she throw off that bridge?,' I think you'll love this book. Highly recommended.
A phenomenal, thorough account of music history’s most mysterious swamp pop composer. Bobbie Gentry can (not ‘could,’ let’s not speak of her as if she’s dead) hold her own with many of today’s singers and entertainers. Even though she’s lived reclusively for more than thirty years now, I do so hope fans will be treated with at least one more public appearance before Ms. Gentry becomes too old; however, as Jane Fonda and Betty White prove fantastically, age is just a number. The book mentions Gentry has a home studio. Wouldn’t it be nice if she’s been recording music all these years and one day her fans got a chance to hear it? Oh, what a treat that would be! Until then, enjoy retirement, Ms. Gentry, and thank you, Tara Murtha, for writing this brilliant exposé about one of my favorite entertainers. Keep your eyes open. I don’t think we’ve seen the last Bobbie Lee Gentry.
