About the Author
Andrew Butterfield holds an honours degree in Engineering and a PhD in Computer Science and is currently Head of the Foundation and Methods Group at Trinity College Dublin, as well as Director of Undergraduate Teaching and Learning in the School of Computer Science and Statistics. His research interests include the formal aspects of computing and pure lazy functional programming languages, and he has published in various specialist journals (Formal Aspects of Computing, Science of Programming), has edited a number of conference proceedings (Implementing Functional Languages, Unifying Theories of Programming) and has been guest editor for an issue of Formal Methods in System Design.Gerard Ekembe Ngondi holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Telecommunications obtained at the National Advanced School of Post and Telecommunications (Yaounde, Cameroon) and an MSc in Computing obtained at the University of York (UK). He is currently doing a PhD in Computer Science at the University of York. His research work is on formal reasoning about the concept of 'mobility' in the UTP (Unifying Theories of Programming) framework.

This book looks like it was a feat of depth and breadth when it first came out. Unfortunately it has not kept pace with a fast moving area, and is thus of less interest for someone wishing to understand current terminology used widely in business and industry.Areas of active interest such as data analytics, development operations and open source software receive scant coverage. Interested in big data? Data warehousing appears to be the end of the line for this book. There are 23 matches for Oracle, but there is nothing on Hadoop, data locality, JBOD, speculative execution, map reduction, bloom filters, or even the TPC database standards. Interested in dev ops? Git gets an entry, but not the underlying computer science: don't go to this book for a definition of directed acyclic graphs, though you can piece it together by looking at directed graphs and acyclic separately, which for me was hard to piece together. Dynamic scaling, swarming, containers, continuous delivery and pipelining are missing. Coverage of pre-2000 technologies is there: IBM Token Ring gets 14 hits.It appears there is also a tilt toward PC fix-it home computing. There is a quaint "list of useful websites" offering "free" information, but which lead to UK magazine subscription sites computershopper and computeractive with subscription offers denominated in UK currency. Links to sites used broadly and authoritative in 2018, such as Wikipedia, Stack Overflow, Stack Exchange, Google, O'Reilly's Safari and Github are not on the "list of useful websites."

I am new to computer science so I feel I can't really give a strong review for this book, however, it is thick and full of text. (I presume this is a good thing...)
Like the back cover says,"Comprehensive and up to date" with over 6500 words.
