An excellent overview of the abortion debate. Sproul presents his view in detail, the anti position obviously. He also presents the opposing views, albeit very brief. HIs argument centers around the command that thou shalt not kill. If you get tis book, read the first appendix. It is the equivalent of three additional chapters. This is the Pastor Sproul, not the academic Professor Sproul. I would have liked to see more out of it, but with less than 200 pages, it is indeed a great brief and basic overview.
Sproul approaches the issue of abortion from scientific, religious, historical and legal angles. The author does an expert job of being thorough. The court trial transcript at the end is very informative about the science of abortion and the legal systems many questions about it.
While I have my own clear views on abortion informed by my Faith. This book was a difficult read. The attempt to be emotive was a bit much for me but I gather that I am not really the target audience. A necessary conversation in our times for sure and my biggest take away is that ‘pro-choice’ is a not a moral option for a Christian on this and most other matters of this kind.
Since there are few issues that divide America more, I think Dr Sproul's book on abortion is timely and relevant. He fairly and honestly defines the issue.
A very comprehensive book on the situation at hand that is very relevant as today. The author, Dr. Sproul of Ligonier Ministries (at the time of this review, may God rest his soul in Paradise) has certainly established credibility all throughout, as being studious and applying Biblical ethics and science hand-in-hand with each other. No rationale was sacrified and the book offers much information whereas it should be recognized as a go-to resource for those who want to have an important perspective, and see where did both sides of the issue come from.
I commend this book to anyone wanting to gain a firm footing on their stance pertaining to abortion. It is crucial that we know how to articulate the position of pro-life and have intelligent conversations with our pro-choice neighbors. Sproul discusses many of the common aspects to the abortion conversation and helped solidify my position of pro-life as a defender of the sanctity of life.
This is an amazing book that looks at a very emotional issue. Grounded in logic and scripture. I would highly recommend this book.
I appreciated Sproul weighing in on this topic. Those who have read other works on pro-life works (see my review of Scott Klusendorf's work) will not find anything dramatically new here. Yet it's good to read and review the pro-life's argument. One thing that stood out as unique in this book was actually George Grant's preface. Grant summarized the current landscape in our society, political sphere and culture as the result of the abortion debate since Roe vs. Wade. This fascinating essay filled with footnotes by Grant puts into perspective for the Christian the extent of how much the abortion controversy has seeped into so many spheres of our lives today. The book is worth reading for the preface alone. Getting into Sproul's actual work I do appreciate how the author does deal with various objections given against the prolife position. I was reminded that more women have been known to have been killed by abortion after Roe vs. Wade than before it which makes the back alley abortion argument for legalizing abortion kind of ironic. Concerning the argument that the fetus is part of the woman's body, Sproul bring modern study of cells to bear, noting that babies have a different genetic fingerprint than the mother. The more interesting part of the book is the appendix that ended up being a rather lengthy testimony of a medical expert on the status of the embryo. Perhaps a little too lengthy. Sproul could have had his arguments tighter and I say this because I've seen other works that have made it air tight in their presentation. For those who might want to read an introductory work or to remind and refresh their prolife apologetics I can recommend this work.
