About the Author
THOMAS J. CUTLER is a U.S. Navy retired lieutenant commander and former gunner's mate second class who served in patrol craft, cruisers, destroyers, and aircraft carriers. He is the founder and former Director of the Walbrook Maritime Academy in Baltimore. Currently he is Fleet Professor of Strategy and Policy with the Naval War College and is the Gordon England Chair of Professional Naval Literature at the U.S. Naval Institute.

I ABSOLUTELY recommend this book to ANYONE who has a loved one in the Navy. The cover may say "Parent's Guide" but as a Navy girlfriend I have found it incredibly insightful and informative. A particular snippet of the synopsis on the back of the book really summarize the importance of this kind of tool in the form of a book: "As these sons and daughters are becoming uniformed, the parents remain uninformed. This book is both a translation manual and a cultural guide to your son's or daughter's chosen profession."
The author of this book also wrote the Blue Jacket’s Manual that sailors use in Boot Camp. There are some sections that are almost exactly the same. This book helped me understand some of the foundational aspects of the Navy in function, rates, expectations, etc. It, of course, could not answer all of the questions, but this was perfect for helping our family transition into being a navy family.
This is a great book for parents who do not have much personal experience with the US Navy. Where do you go to learn about what your son or daughter will be experiencing? What are some of the traditions? What is some of the lingo? This book addressed many of my questions and let me know things I wasn't even aware I should know. Great job. Of course, we all want the particulars of the job our kids are doing, but the book finds a good balance between covering it all and going to deep.
Daughter is going to boot camp in August. This book was very helpful to have me understand some of there lingo. And let me In on the process.
Lots of helpful information, really a plus if you have a child heading to boot camp. Covers all aspects of the Navy from day to day operations to terminology.
I found this book very helpful with information about how the navy was programed how the ranks were assigned and what duties were expected etc.
